SK Hynix To Invest $15 Billion in New Semiconductor Facilities in South Korea

South Korea's SK Hynix (000660.KS) said on Wednesday that it plans to invest 21.6 trillion won ($15.07 billion) to build new chip production lines in the South Korean city of Yongin by 2030 to meet rising demand for semiconductors. ($1 = 1,433.33 won)

This planned investment is part of SK Hynix's strategy to expand domestic manufacturing capacity and strengthen its position as one of the world's leading memory chip makers amid surging global demand driven by artificial intelligence, data centers, and high-performance computing applications. The additional funding will support the construction of multiple clean rooms and advanced fabrication facilities at the Yongin site, helping the company accelerate production of high-end memory products such as DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

Industry watchers say the move underscores the broader trend of semiconductor companies investing heavily in fabrication capacity as the AI boom fuels demand for advanced chips, while South Korea continues efforts to solidify its role in the global semiconductor supply chain.
